Just off Merton Road in Wandsworth, you’ll find La Finestra, a hole-in-the-wall focaccia spot marked by a tiny bell you ring to let them know you’ve arrived.
It really is a charming little place. If it weren’t for the perfectly polished red tiles beneath the arched windows, you could mistake it for someone’s front room rather than a sandwich shop. It already feels like a neighbourhood favourite even before you’ve ordered.
The menu is stacked with more than ten focaccia sandwiches, but I went straight for the Pistacchiosa. Thick, cloud-soft focaccia holds generous layers of mortadella and burrata, but it was the pistachio pesto that made it memorable. Nutty, bright and a little salty, it cut through the richness and tied everything together. It tasted handcrafted rather than assembled, the sort of sandwich that slows you down because you want to appreciate it.
If I could tweak one thing, it would be the option to have it warm. When I got home and put the second half in the air fryer, it became something else entirely. The focaccia crisped at the edges, the burrata loosened and the pesto bloomed. It was incredible.
At £9.45, it is very well priced for the quality of the ingredients, and absolutely worth the trip. I would recommend it without hesitation.
