If I had a pound for every time I’ve had to correct someone who swears Beigel Bake makes the best salt beef in London, I could easily afford a season ticket at Arsenal.
For those willing to venture out to Hatch End, a leafy suburb in North West London, a sandwich I grew up eating weekly still awaits.
B&K is proof that quantity means nothing without quality. They may not serve as many sandwiches as Beigel Bake, but every one they make is better.
The story begins in the 1950s with founder Bambos Georgiou, who started out in London’s West End perfecting the art of salt beef. His skill caught the attention of Selfridges, who invited him to open the iconic Brass Rail in their Food Hall. Later, he launched B&K in Edgware, where his family learned the craft. Decades on, his sons and grandsons still carry the torch, serving salt beef exactly as Bambos intended — with care, craft, and tradition.
At £12, the Salt Beef Sandwich holds its own among London’s best. You can choose between a soft beigel or rye bread, both stacked with tender layers of pink salt beef. Each bite melts effortlessly, the meat breaking apart naturally on your tongue.
I always order a latke on the side — a golden, crisp-edged hash brown that could hold its own in any gourmet breakfast spot.
For those who make the trip, prepare to taste the best.
