Aspen & Meursault: Battersea’s Quiet Corner for Romance

Tucked beside the brutalist edges of the Draycott Court Estate, Aspen & Meursault is the kind of low-key wine bar that surprises you with its warmth, its charm and its ability to turn an ordinary evening into something quietly romantic.

Review at a glance: ★★★★☆

The idea of a cosy, softly lit wine bar sitting beside the concrete mass of the Draycott Court Estate sounds almost contradictory, but Aspen & Meursault has never cared much for convention. Hidden along Westbridge Road, just a short walk from Battersea Square, it has become a quiet favourite for locals who know exactly where to find something special.

Walking in feels a bit like being welcomed into a home rather than a bar. In the summer, I almost always sit outside. Even in late November, the heaters hold their own and the fairy lights overhead pull the street into a warm glow. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most charming first date spots in Battersea.

Inside, the space is calm in a way that most wine bars try and fail to achieve. Soft yellows and deep greens thread through the room, plants drape across corners and the lighting is just low enough to make you relax almost instantly. There is no pretence here, no pressure to know what you are talking about. That matters, because I have never considered myself a wine expert.

Fortunately, Aspen & Meursault has a sommelier team that bridges that gap effortlessly. Whether it is a natural wine, a full-bodied red or something with a little funk, their recommendations have never missed. They guide rather than lecture, and the confidence they have in what they serve makes the whole experience feel easy.

And then there is the food, which is far better than it needs to be for a neighbourhood wine bar. I usually start with the rock oysters before moving through two or three plates. The Braised Ox Cheek, slow cooked in a spiced red pepper and red wine sauce, is rich without being heavy, and the Salmon Gravalax arrives jewel-like from its beetroot cure with a hint of dill and horseradish. Everything tastes thoughtful, well-balanced and quietly indulgent.

Aspen & Meursault has an atmosphere that lingers long after you leave. It is romantic without trying to be, relaxed without slipping into lazy service and intimate without the slightest hint of pretension. It is the kind of place you find once and keep returning to, simply because it feels good to be there.
